Influence

Influence is defined as engaging others in a process, idea, or vision (The University of Sydney, 2022).

The ability to influence is important because it allows individuals to inspire collaboration, drive positive change, and contribute to shared goals. In radiography, influence plays a vital role in promoting patient-centred care, fostering teamwork, and supporting continuous learning within clinical environments. By effectively influencing others, radiographers can encourage best practices, advocate for patients, and contribute to safer, higher-quality healthcare delivery.

Participating in the mentorship program was one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic journey, allowing me to engage with other students in their broader university experience and professional development. As a mentor, I supported lower-cohort students throughout the year, guiding them through both academic and clinical challenges. My goal was to create an approachable, supportive environment that encouraged open communication, confidence, and self-directed learning. An example below was one of my mentees seeking advice on effectively memorising positioning techniques, where I provided her with some notes I had made previously when memorising those positioning techniques myself.

Throughout the mentorship, I shared practical strategies that helped me navigate university life, including managing coursework, preparing for assessments, and balancing study with wellbeing. I also offered advice on clinical placements — such as effective patient communication and positioning techniques — to help bridge theory and practice. By encouraging reflection and feedback, I helped my mentees build resilience and confidence.

This experience strengthened my ability to influence by communicating clearly, demonstrating empathy, and modelling professional behaviour. It reinforced that true influence extends beyond technical expertise — it involves inspiring, guiding, and empowering others to achieve their potential within both academic and professional contexts.
